Eating Disorders Webliography

Sections:

This webliography is created with the layperson as well as the health sciences professional in mind. The material is more inclusive of treatment and support information, with a good bit of medical information provided. Many eating disorder sites are not inclusive of research and treatment information; my goal is to provide a gateway to general information for the many types of people who are interested in and/or affected by eating disorders. The information below hints at the need for information, and more importantly communication, concerning an illness that affects so many people.

  • More than five million Americans suffer from eating disorders.

  • Fifteen percent of young women have substantially disordered eating attitudes and behaviors.

  • An estimated 1,000 women die from anorexia nervosa every year.

For information on the definition and diagnosis of eating disorders, as well as general information and frequently asked questions, consider the following sites.

  • FAQ page from Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, Inc. (ANRED).

  • National Institute of Mental Health Eating Disorders - Facts and the Searches for Solutions.

  • Facts About Eating Disorders from the Center for Change. Focuses on Anorexia and Bulimia.

  • Definitions of Anorexia, Bulimia, and Compulsive Overeating.

  • More information from the Anorexia Bulimia Nervosa Association (ABNA).

Eating Disorders affect all types of people, young and old , male and female. The web provides specific information regarding male sufferers and athletes and eating disorders. Any of the organizations featured on this webliography will also link to this information. While much attention is paid to anorexia nervosa and bulimia, there are other well known diseases such as Pica and Muscle Dysmorphia. ANRED has a section on less well known disorders that you can access here.

  • The Academy for Eating Disorders site features a thorough summary of eating disorders information.

If you feel you may have an eating disorder, take this test to determine if your eating behavior is disordered.
